DOUBLE A FRAME
Perched in the forested landscape of Lake Arrowhead, Arrowhead Double A-Frame is a residential renovation that transforms a derelict 1970s cabin into a serene, three-story retreat. The project reimagines the original A-frame structure by introducing a cross-axis layout, creating a signature "double A-frame" form that defines the spatial and architectural identity of the home. Preserving the period-correct essence of the original cabin, the design balances old and new—retaining existing wood elements that were sandblasted with walnut shells and lightly stained, while introducing new flooring and thoughtful updates throughout. A restrained material palette, inspired by Scandinavian and Japanese influences, creates a timeless, warm atmosphere across sleeping quarters, public spaces, and a soaring entertaining loft.
The interior layout is organized across three levels: sleeping and service spaces on the ground floor, public gathering areas and a guest suite on the second, and a cathedral-like loft above. Light, texture, and color are carefully orchestrated—navy tones on cabinetry and circulation walls contrast with light wood in bedrooms and living spaces. The central living room is anchored by a tumbled boulder fireplace and opens to panoramic forest views through tall glass windows. A custom terrazzo counter, two-tone kitchen with Fenix laminate cabinetry, and mid-century furnishings add depth to the minimalist composition. The loft, carpeted for softness, houses period-correct artifacts and furnishings beneath vaulted ceilings and cove lighting, while the bedrooms offer quiet, personalized sanctuaries. Prioritizing sustainability, the design minimizes waste through strategic reuse, efficient systems, and a largely untouched exterior—preserving the integrity of the original structure while elevating it for contemporary living.
