“If you were walking down the street and saw this, you would have to go in. That clever simplicity is a complement to the mysteries of its singular inspiration carried throughout the interior via diverse materials, i.e., an abstract art installation and a plethora of natural light – not to mention the floor-to-ceiling Sasquatch, made from a combination of greenery and negative wall space.”

CHALLENGE
To create an airy café within a long, slender volume that can answer to the demands of a multitude of clientele and activities. To create a community space for the client’s first location while also defining the café’s brand identity.

SOLUTION
The minimalist space is defined by custom-designed, built-in seating, curving along the walls and coffee bar to provide comfortable spaces for eating, drinking, and socializing. These distinctive elements are clearly visible through the new storefront to create an iconic image for the shop from the street.   There are a multitude of options for clients to relax, work, socialize or explore, one of the clearest examples of Dan’s ability to create meaningful spaces.

The playful, memorable design abstractly evokes the forest, where the brand’s mascot—stylized Sasquatch figure—is said to live. The hairy creature seems to emerge from a living wall of real greenery, welcoming patrons into the terrazzo-lined café. A mix of materials and a site-specific mural continue the sense of wilderness and create a visually dynamic environment.

OUTCOME
The café has become a popular destination and a distinct local icon. It’s also garnered awards from AIA/LA and publications like Interior Design, Visual Merchandising and Store Design, and Hospitality Design, among others. “Coffee For Sasquatch was able to avoid the sameness you see in coffee shop design,” noted owner Claire Ackad. “Dan’s innovative design merges beauty with service—perfect for our brand.” Dan is now designing a second café for the company in SoHo, New York.
