His recent projects, call to mind the distinctness of a Frank Lloyd Wright or Mies van der Rohe home. Like Wright’s cantilevered Fallingwater, or Mies’ glass-on-stilts Farnsworth House, Brunn’s stylish and contemporary Flip Flop and Fold Up houses have a shape, flow, and design that’s both visually arresting and not easily forgotten.

FLIP FLOP HOUSE
CHALLENGE
To design a piece of practical, eco-friendly architecture that not only expands on the horizon with panoramic vistas, but also offers wall space for the client’s personal art collection.
SOLUTION
Projecting a coolly minimalist sophistication, the home’s façade is subtly deceptive in its simplicity, dominating the site with protruding and retracting floors and ceilings. A novel “breathing” façade, comprised of four 8’ x 9’ dynamic walls, was devised. Each wall pivots to offer varied views, privacy, gallery space, and literal breathability.
The home’s massive cantilevers not only facilitate ample outdoor balconies, but they act as protective shading elements. Integral to the design is the choreography of circulation; dynamism abounds within the spatial and structural arrangement, the lighting conditions, and even the material finishes.
OUTCOME
Soon after completion, several nearby developments grounded their designs in Flip Flop’s minimalist design cues. Additionally, Dan was quickly commissioned to design four more eco-friendly homes in the immediate vicinity.
Archipendium
“As its name suggests, the Flip Flop House plays with a sense of duality on multiple design levels. Acting as an architectural chameleon, the dynamic house is malleable to the clients’ desire to both display their art collection and embrace the sweeping vistas of Venice Beach.”
