SANDY LANE ADU

Set within a lush, hillside property in Los Angeles, this 500-square-foot artist retreat was designed as a quiet, elevated sanctuary for acclaimed artist Laurie Raskin—renowned for her vibrant works, including poster art for the 1984 Summer Olympics. The addition sits gently atop the existing two-car garage of a Mid-Century modern home, carefully integrated to maintain the home’s architectural character and preserve its tropical, oasis-like setting. Intended as a space of retreat and creative reflection, the second-story addition provides expansive views of the horizon while remaining visually discreet from the street and surrounding landscape.

Ascending alongside the structure through two-story-tall windows, visitors move upward through a corridor of lush greenery, where the tropical landscape casts shifting shadows against a restrained material palette. At the top, the journey turns 180 degrees to reveal a serene sitting area nestled in the treetops. A bedroom follows, subtly divided by a soft grey velvet curtain that pockets into concealed millwork. The bed is oriented toward panoramic views, with a skylit bathroom behind it, complete with shower and a soaking tub that frames a view through the bedroom and out to the landscape beyond. Designed to blend, not boast, the retreat is both an homage to the home’s original spirit and a deeply personal space for rest, inspiration, and escape.
